Join us for a unique perspective on the newest version of the Ontario Building Code (OBC 2012). More than a technical review, we will look into how OBC 2012 positions Ontario compared to the rest of the provinces and the rest of the world, as well as what’s on the horizon for building codes and for LEED. It will be led by Doug Cane, Principal of Caneta Research Inc. / Caneta Energy, who has worked directly with both federal and provincial Code authorities to update OBC 2012, as well as to develop OBC 2006 and NECB 2011 (the National Building Code).

Caneta Energy (Caneta Research Inc.) has undertaken a number of Energy Code comparison studies on behalf of both federal and provincial Code authorities. Recent work by Caneta for the Ministry of Housing Code Development branch for OBC 2012 involved side-by-side Code comparisons, undertaking energy simulations, life cycle costing, greenhouse gas analysis and preparation of draft code sections for the energy provisions of SB-10.
Learning Objectives:
- A brief background of the new SB-10 of the OBC 2012, how it was developed and what factors and considerations came into play;
- Comparisons of OBC 2012 to the previous version, OBC 2006, as well as LEED Canada NC Option 1 Path 1 (MNECB 1997), the National Building Code (NECB 2011) and the new ASHRAE 90.1-2010;
We'll Also Cover:
- How Ontario measures up relative to other Canadian provinces, the US and internationally;
- What’s in store for the future: possible future Code changes (including a peek into OBC 2017), projections, and implications for the LEED Canada rating system.
This presentation will refer to the OBC 2012 as it relates to commercial and residential high-rise buildings.

Caneta Energy (Caneta Research Inc.) has undertaken a number of Energy Code comparison studies on behalf of both federal and provincial Code authorities. Mr. Cane was project manager on the Ministry of Housing, Code Development Branch, energy code update that prepared the new energy provisions for both the OBC 2006 and the now current OBC 2012. Doug is a former member of the ASHRAE 90.1 Committee, is active in CSA HVAC equipment performance standards and consults with NRCan on HVAC equipment efficiency regulations.
